Pattern spotlight: Machiasport Cardigan by Beatrice Perron Dahlen (me!) from MAINE knits
When dreaming up a book, I felt it was important to have a few staple items in there. For me, an open front cardigan is a must for my wardrobe, and especially for the in-between seasons here in Maine. I'm nearly incapable of making anything utterly simple, and so even my simple wardrobe staple needed a little something to dress it up - thus, the lace on the back neck and sleeves. It's just enough to be interesting to knit and wear, while still being simple enough to go with nearly anything in one's closet. Peace Fleece is a Maine company that I have the utmost respect for, their mission is truly humble, and their yarn is hard wearing. This sweater really will last a lifetime.
Because I have more than a few designs in MAINE knits, some of these questions I'll only share once, so here goes!
Where did the inspiration for this design come from?
I love lace that feels organic. It reminds me of the ocean tide, or a spring flower coming up through the snow. Just a touch of lace - not too much!
What are your favorite Maine fibers, yarns, products, etc.?
There truly are too many to name! The yarn this sweater was knit in though, Peace Fleece is one that I have so many warm fuzzies for. While I don't know the owners personally, Maine is a small community, and so I have heard a lot of wonderful things about them. They really are committed to peace and I really love how they work towards that mission in their yarn business. It's heart warming.
What people, places or things in Maine inspire you and your work?
All of it! It's a place of beauty and hard working people, and the combination of that is incredibly inspiring.
What is your favorite time of year in Maine?
This is such a tough question really. I love fall, always. But I also love this time of year when things are getting dark and it's cold outside. (Or it usually is, though this year seems different.) But spending days on end at the beach with my children in the summer is hands down my most favorite ever! I think those are the moments I'll treasure when they're grown.
Describe your perfect Maine day.
I think my perfect Maine day would be an impossibility, as it would definitely include different seasons in a day! A perfect Maine day would include a trip to the beach with my family (in any weather, we're there!) It would also include some knitting time, some hot cocoa, and some fresh farm veg for mealtime from our garden or one of our favorite farms. It would also include an evening out with my husband to one of Portland's many amazing restaurants.
